Booky ltd. is a contemporary Nigerian bookstore that serves a variety of book genres for various educational levels and age groups. Targeted towards book enthusiasts and students who enjoy reading physical books, Booky has several branches across the country. Building on its success as a physical bookstore, Booky hopes to tap into the book-lovers market by offering physical book retail and lending services over the internet. This case study will examine how Booky's innovative approach to online book retail and lending has helped the company expand its reach and serve a broader audience.
Designing a user-friendly app for hassle-free physical book buying and renting experience with Booky
Book lovers often face challenges when purchasing physical books due to the time and effort required to browse through bookstores, as well as the high cost of new releases. To address these challenges, Booky is an innovative mobile app designed to offer a hassle-free solution for ordering physical books with an extensive range of titles to choose from.
Booky is a mobile app that offers a solution to the challenges faced by book lovers when purchasing physical books, including the time and effort required to browse through bookstores and the high cost of new releases. However, users may face obstacles such as the inability to physically browse and handle books before purchasing, and those with limited internet access or who are uncomfortable with online transactions.
To overcome these challenges, the app aims to design a user-friendly platform that caters to book lovers' needs and preferences, offering a wide selection of books, secure payment options, and fast delivery while prioritizing ease of use and accessibility to encourage frequent book purchases and build customer loyalty.

Approach
A user-centered design approach for the Booky app
The user-centered design approach taken for Booky involved several steps, including quick research on potential users and the target market, the creation of user personas, the design of low-fidelity wireframes, usability and functionality testing, iterative design refinement, documentation of the final product design, and user and developer testing and validation.
Research
The design approach for Booky involved conducting quick research on potential users and the target market to gain insights into their needs and preferences when it comes to buying physical books. This information was used to create user personas, which are fictional representations of the app's target users. These personas helped the design team to better understand the user's motivations, behaviors, and goals, which in turn influenced the design decisions for the app.
Prototype & Implement
Next, I created wireframes, which are low-fidelity mockups of the app's interface. These wireframes served as a blueprint for the final product design, allowing the team to iterate and refine the design based on feedback from users and stakeholders. The wireframes were also used to test the app's usability and functionality, ensuring that the app was easy to use and met the needs of its users.
Test & Gather Feedback
As part of the Booky Ltd. project, I was responsible for gathering feedback on the design of their online book retail and lending services. To achieve this, I tested and validated the final product design with users and developers.
My team conducted user testing sessions, and physical surveys to get insights from the actual users. Through this feedback-gathering process, we identified areas of improvement and made necessary adjustments to the product design to enhance the overall user experience.
Iterate
We made improvements to the Booky Ltd. product design to enhance the user experience. We simplified the navigation, added new features like book waitlist, wish list, and customer rating, and created a cleaner look with less clutter. These changes made the online retail and lending experience more enjoyable and user-friendly, which contributed to the project's success.
The impact
As a result of the test and feedback gathered, the company saw an increase in customer satisfaction and loyalty, which contributed to the success of the project.
A few success metrics we considered for the application success includes
• Growth in number of books sold or rented via the application over time • Checkout metrics • User’s goal completion

The app provides an extensive range of book titles, secure payment options, and fast delivery to ensure customer satisfaction. However, the challenge for the project was to design an app that caters to book lovers' needs and preferences while providing a hassle-free solution for ordering physical books online. One potential challenge for Booky users was the inability to physically browse and handle books before purchasing. To overcome this, the app was designed to prioritize ease of use and accessibility, encouraging frequent book purchases and building customer loyalty.
Upon completing the project, I reflected on a few features that could provide a richer experience for users of the app.
In the near future, I hope to
• update the Store section of the application • Include search by ISBN and image/picture scan • provide book conditions for book available for rental • gather real-time user data to advance the entire use of the application • provide more granular micro-interaction to engage the audience
